from the confines of my patioโฆ
I love my buzzing, bountiful, bustling bees. They are spirited and determined as they burrow their way in and out of the pink, purple and orange. We exist in harmony on my patio, eyeing one another as we go about our business. And those bees have a whole bunch of eyes (like five) so they can witness my lounging and wine imbibing from all angles. I have only been stung one time and it was totally my fault… but man oh man did that sucker hurt. I forgave the bee.
I know, I KNOWโฆIโve heard it be told too that bees die after they stingโฆ ohhhh the guilt! However, being the queen of DE-NILE, and Googleโs reassurance that stinging bumblebees donโt die, I have no doubt my precious prickling pollinator must have been a bumblebee! No wonder those fuzzy-wuzzies are my favorite. Like tiny stuffed animals they hover; their tiny wings keeping them aloft. I am absolved of all guilt… right?
Hummingbirds love our garden and they visit with regularity. Partial to the bright orange or red, and with their impressive darting about and zippy wings, they are hell bent on mesmerizing us. Legend has it that they bring love, good luck and joy to those that spot them. I SEE YOU… so bring it on already!
Then there is OUR cardinal. Weโve named him โRedโ. He enjoys our red maple tree and occasionally perches on the back of one of our chairs as if to join in the conversation. ‘Red’ helped himself to one of our succulents and I watched as he dragged and dropped over and over until he gave up… I guess he bit off a bit more than he could chew (ha-ha). He brought a “friend” to visit… we are anxiously awaiting a big announcement. And his song is always recognizable cause itโs the best… like top of the charts in the top 100 Bird Calls Billboard.
Our TO-MAY-TOE/TO-MAH-TOES have produced in a most bountiful fashion this summer. They are delish and best just picked and warm from the sun… like candy. Our BAY-ZIL/BAH-ZIL has been prolific. Nothing yums-up a Caprese salad or fork-twirling pasta OR greens-up a pesto like a bunch of BAY-ZIL/BAH-ZIL! Just rubbing the leaves as I stroll on by is intoxicatingโฆ fantastico, delizioso! A basket of fresh focaccia, meatballs simmering and a scoop, or three, of gelato and Iโm an official Italian mama.
We TALK TO the bees, the hummingbirds and โRedโ…. we TALK TO our plants and ABOUT our plants and inquire, โhave you seen โRedโ today?โ. I will admit to you, and only you, that we refer to our plants by name. Willow, Lolly, Big Ed… you get the idea.
We most definitely have gone a bit wackadoodle, patio-cray-cray, buzzy-flappy-singsongy-nutty this yearโฆ but can you blame us??
we’re isolated,
sequestered,
cut off,
distanced,
quarantinedโฆ
we are marooned on the patio.
Donโt judge.
~addendum: that was all so 2020.
~addendum #2: It’s 2022 and having tested positive for Covid – here we are. Yet again ๐ฉ
This year I didn’t plant any fruits or vegetables as we just got back from a 4 week trip, starting in Cabo Mexico and ending in California. Our back yard does have roses, bushes and lots of huge rocks. It’s glorious. Almost no bees, but lots of singing birds. We spend a lot of time in our backyard, loving it.
How wonderful!! The trip, the rose, the bushes, the rocks, the tweeting birds… love it! Xo
How wonderful… the trip, the roses, the bushes, the rocks, the birds singing. Love it all xoxo
๐๐๐ Iโm so jealous of your harvest!!! Our PNW organic tomato plants have yielded 1 regular (?) tomato and 3 cherry tomatoesโฆweโre talking 5plants๐ณ
Oh nooooo ๐ณ that is so sad. Next year!! ๐
Love this, Kar. Same, same with the naming. Thanks for sharing your stories!
Gotta hear your names. I have no doubt they are more clever than ours ๐
Love your pics, and my mouth is watering but I’m still afraid of bees! Please no redo of 2020.
xoxo
I will protect you from the bees! Xoxo
Youโve always had the most bee-utiful garden! If I was ๐ Iโd totally hang there, too! You take after your (non-Italian) mama! Love you!!
Beeeeeyoutiful๐โค๏ธ
You BEEing so clever! Xoxo
I am so proud to be coming
Love you!! Xoxo
Cute post. Aunt Anita would be so proud of your naming of the plants. I named the butterfly that comes around “Butter” ๐ And the stray cat’s name is Snowball! Miss you all xoxo
She would, wouldn’t she??! Butter and Snowball…love it!! Miss all of you! Xoxo
Just stay away from the murder hornets
I know – my bees seem to be getting bigger and bigger…but so far not those damn murderers!!
Green Acres is the place for be. Farm living is the life for me. Land spreading out so far and wide keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside :). Donโt BEElieve me! Love you KFJ
Yes, it’s my little Green Acres in the city…best of both worlds! Love you JBK
Mrs. Green Jeans… I love ya, and that patio of yours. Keep the pasta warm, I’ll be right over ! [I wish ๐ ] Tone’
Keepin’ the pasta warm – hurry over Tone xoxoxoxo
Thanks for sharing!! I love my patio too! I feed the birds across the yard and love to sit and look at my flowers , hastas and watch the silly squirrels ๐ฟ eating and playing with each other. A very quiet and much needed solace. I donโt think me and bees would get along that well ๐ณ
Much needed solace for sure. My bees would get along with you just fine. In the meantime enjoy those squirrels!
Your garden and landscape are beautiful. I feel the same way, escaping through nature by sitting on the deck or riding my bike. I am so much in love with nature. Hearing the birds early in the morning, seeing the bees and viewing the different birds in our garden.
Such wonderful escapes Sandra. Love riding my bike too…nature, the wind, the sounds…love it! xoxo
Prolific gardener and bird whisperer, that you are! We love when the hummingbirds occasionally fly right to our heads (by mistake) while we might also be imbibing on our porch as well.
I see nothing wrong with naming non-human things so no judging here. Anyway, I’m off to have some time with Renรฉe…. my piano.
They fly into your head??? You must have some imbibing hummingbirds. My “Hummy” appears to be sober! Give my love to Renee…xoxoxo
Oh, Karen–you’ve done it again! What a fabulous read, photo of one of your busy bumble bees, and your vibrant, luscious looking harvest. I’m salivating just looking at that pic and can smell the basil/bah-zil! Your quip about picking tomatoes/to-MAH-toez jogged my memory of my mom saying the same thing, almost verbatim, about enjoying the fabulous flavor of ones, still “warm from the sun,” from her childhood garden. WRITE on, Karen. We love it and you!
“Warm from the sun” – love that memory of your mom! Thanks for your wonderful comments. Love you!!
Love this!
Thanks Gordon! Love that you read my stuff!
Haha!! And Yummo!! I can hear the buzz and smell the herbs!! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ปโค๏ธโค๏ธ
And like we talked about – those bees are getting bigger and bigger. Freshman fifteen?? Love you xoxoxo
You are hysterical and I love it and you ! DYC
Love you DYC – hope you are laughing with me, not at me!!!! hahahahahah
